On June 23, 1661, a marriage and friendship treaty was signed at Whitehall in London, according to which King Charles II of England undertook to marry the Portuguese princess Catherine as soon as possible. Catherine (Catalina da Braganca), raised in a Catholic convent, arrives in England as an extremely innocent and young woman, who is equally struck by Charles's masculine charm and embittered cynicism.
