Knut Hamsun's (1859-1952) best-known novel, which brought him world fame. It is the story of a man who settles in the middle of uninhabited primeval nature, where he builds a homestead and raises a family. Through hard work and harmonious coexistence with nature, his attitude to life and independence from the ups and downs of the industrial and commercial world that is encroaching on the land are formed.
