Giorgione, born Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco (1477–1510), was an Italian painter of the Renaissance. His name means George the Great. Giorgione was born in Castelfranco, in the province of Treviso, in the province of Venice. He studied painting with Giovanni Bellini. Between 1508 and 1510, Giorgione painted his most famous work, “Sleeping Venus.” His other famous work is considered to be “Concert in the Wilderness.” Giorgione was also known as a monumentalist. He painted frescoes for Venetian palaces, which have unfortunately been destroyed.
