During the Turkish Wars, the city was constantly under attack. The Ottoman Empire, which had conquered Buda, besieged the city of Eger in 1522, but they failed to capture the city, despite the fact that the Turks outnumbered the city's defenders by almost 6 times. During the 40-day siege, the brave women of Eger also defended the city. This defense of Eger is celebrated as the greatest victory of the Magyars in Hungarian history. The defenders of Eger were immortalized by Géza Gàrdonyi in his novel "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon ".
