Queen Margot is a historical figure known as Marguerite de Valois, the sister of Charles IX, King of France, who married Henry of Navarre. The marriage was arranged as part of a conspiracy by Catholic rulers, led by the king’s mother, Catherine de’ Medici, against the Protestant Huguenots. Henry of Navarre was a Protestant, and the wedding was used to lure a large number of Huguenot nobles to Paris. The night of 24 August 1572 is known as the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre.
