A recurring motif in Fowles’s work is the hero’s conflict between self-realization and the rules existing in society. Often, the hero is guided toward freedom by a mysterious stranger, and the signposts along the way are not prohibitions or commands, but ever new enigmas. In “The Magus,” the first-person protagonist Nicholas Urfe also finds himself on a Greek island caught in a psychological game where reality and illusion are tightly intertwined.
