In this novel by Raimond Kolk (1924-1992) - who remained in Sweden as a soomepoiss in 1944 and later became a writer - the reader is taken to the author’s native Võrumaa of the 1920s and 1930s. At the centre of the work is the life story of Meeri Pärtin, who rises from being a farmhand’s daughter to becoming a teacher. The novel depicts her determination to break free from the stifling village community and the power of the farm into which she has been forced by circumstance through marriage to an uneducated landowner much older than herself. Considered Kolk’s most artistically accomplished prose work, Sulajääl holds a distinguished place among Estonian rural novels.
