The first novel (1955) published in exile in Sweden by the poet and prose writer Raimond Kolk (1924-1992) is set in the summer of 1948, against the backdrop of the Estonian Song Festival in Stockholm. The author follows the inner turmoil of the protagonist, Ilmar Kaart - a former Finnish Boys volunteer - as he wavers between two women: Ullabrit, a Swedish tobacco seller, and Reet, his youthful love and former farm servant. The portrayal is empathetic, yet accompanied by a gently amused compassion.
