The story takes place in Narva. Through the eyes of Villem Luige, who is moving from the countryside to the city, we are given a picture of Kreenholm, the power of the factories, and the atmosphere of the working class. Villem Luik comes to town, hoping to find a better life here. At first, he is happy to work in the factory, because everything here is so grandiose and powerful. But years pass. There will be no easier life, but iron hands squeeze all the life juices out of Villem, drop by drop. Villem is left with a miserable crow who cannot take care of himself, let alone his family. Forced by adversity, Villem's wife Juuli ends up on the street, while Villem himself throws his last strength from the window to his death.
