The imaginary diary of the Roman emperor who renounced Christianity is a supplement and variation to the 1978 novel Emperor Julian. The juxtaposition of different worldviews, ways of thinking, and cultural ideals, along with the questions of the nature of progress and the individual’s role in history (as a preserver and creator of ideals), and the problem of the relationship between man-made political mechanisms, spiritual life, and emotional needs, all convey something significant to today’s reader.
