"Salka Valka" is a novel, or rather an epic, about a fisherman's daughter of the same name, born out of wedlock, who takes care of herself from an early age. As she grows into a young woman, she asserts herself completely, becoming one of the most powerful and monumental female figures in world literature.
Her personality is shaped by two key figures: the rough and extremely brutal sailor Steinthór, who falls wildly in love with her when she is still a child, and the dreamy idealist Arnaldur, who teaches her to read and whom Salka herself falls for at an early age. After returning from abroad, where he was introduced to Marxist ideas, Arnaldur transforms the once-neglected and dormant fishing village into a political battleground, in which Salka Valka actively participates—at first as an opponent, later as Arnaldur’s ally.
