A comprehensive overview of Valev Uibopuu's life and creative journey is the second book in the "Estonian Writers" series by Ilmamaa (the first book, about Betti Alver, was published in 2003 in two editions). Ülo Tonts, well-versed in Estonian literature abroad, utilized Valev Uibopuu's archive at the Estonian Literary Museum while compiling the book and corresponded with the author himself and later with his wife, Malle Uibopuu.
Valev Uibopuu was born in 1913 in Karula and spent his entire youth in southern Estonia (except for a brief period as a journalist in Tallinn) until 1943, when a refugee boat took him to Sweden. In exile, Uibopuu was forced to work in various positions, leaving him little time for his writing. In addition to analyzing Uibopuu's literary work, the book's author, Ü. Tonts, provides an overview of Uibopuu's work as a journalist, publisher, and linguist, as well as his other societal contributions.
"This book is deliberately written in such a way that the person behind and within the creative work becomes visible," says the author. The book is illustrated with numerous photographs of Valev Uibopuu and his contemporaries.
