The memoir Four Schools by Arno Niitme follows his 1983 reminiscences Youth and School Years in Treffoonia, published in the USA. In this work, the author recounts his studies at the Physical Education Institute of the University of Tartu, his military service in the Kuperjanov Partisan Battalion and the Combined Military Education Institutions, as well as his time as a teacher and principal at Tapa Secondary School and Tallinn Gustav Adolf Gymnasium. The memoirs cover the period from 1928 to 1944.

Set against the era's background, the book offers an insightful overview of these educational institutions. It is made all the more valuable by its pioneering treatment of several topics in Estonian memoir literature. The author’s remarkable memory and resourcefulness in recounting events and people with information he had at his disposal far from home in the USA are particularly impressive.
