The memoir of Peep Kärp, a journalist from Rakvere during the era of the Republic of Estonia, tells the story of how he fled to the forest after the German occupation, fearing retribution for accepting the position of editor of the Rakvere newspaper during the German period. The recollections provide a vivid picture of his capture and interrogations, the treatment of political prisoners in the prisons of the Estonian SSR, and include particularly harrowing descriptions of Stalinist labor camps.
