One of the pillars of Estonian cultural life in the last quarter of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century, a man with diverse interests and immense scope of activity, Doctor of Philosophy K. A. Hermann, kept a diary from the ages of 17 to 20, which was later completed by Professor Artur Vahter. In an intriguing form, it presents one of the most complicated periods in Estonian intellectual life, often referred to in written word as the "miserable era."
