Aino Kallas, who lived in Tartu during the years covered by the diary, took an active part in Estonian literary life and gained recognition for her works inspired by Estonian themes. Being demanding of herself as a writer, she also needed someone who understood and supported her talent – a person to think alongside her, someone who could have been Juhan Luiga or also Jaan Tõnisson. At the same time, she was aware of how dangerous excessive closeness to them might be. To describe herself, Aino Kallas used the words of a character from G. Byron’s Don Juan: “A woman like frozen champagne.”
