The diary of future Major General of the Republic of Estonia, Juhan Tõrvand (1883–1942), is unique not only because he was, as far as is known, the only Estonian officer who took part in the Kornilov campaign during the Russian Civil War in 1918; it is also a remarkable diary containing the reflections, musings, and notes of a 30-year-old Estonian officer on the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the battles fought in the White Army during the Russian Civil War — at a time when the old world, with its centuries-old monarchy, suddenly began to crack and then collapsed with a mighty roar.

Juhan Tõrvand was not primarily interested in battle descriptions or analyses of victories and defeats at the front, but rather in the human being, society, and the upheavals taking place within it.
