There is a wealth of archaeological monuments, or ancient sites, on the territory of our republic. The number of known and better-preserved sites exceeds two thousand. As historical sources, they are of immeasurable value. Written records provide information about life in Estonia mainly for the past eight hundred years, while the preceding period — roughly ten times longer — is told only through these ancient sites.
The majority — approximately three-quarters of the total — of the archaeological monuments are ancient burial sites.
