The novel Tolm ja tuul presents a complex family drama - the differing life attitudes of parents working in creative fields, subconscious tensions, and a creative crisis ultimately lead to the breakdown of the family. However, it is the children, particularly their psyche, who suffer the most from the mutual hatred between the parents. In the second part of the novel, the focus shifts to the formation of a new family by the youngest daughter, Mirjam, which turns out to be more harmonious than that of her parents. The novel spans a long period - the harsh 1940s, the contradictory 1950s, and later times as well, all seen primarily through the fate of one family. The author's style is psychological, vivid, and rich in imagery.
